Organisation Profile: The Wanganui Restorative Justice Trust provides a victim focused programme which is run by a group of local trustees and works in conjunction with the Wanganui and Marton District Courts. One of the key features of the Wanganui Restorative Justice programme is that it utilises a community based model. This means that two community representatives are chosen from a pool of 40 trained volunteers to attend each victim / offender conference. These representatives are chosen for their skills, knowledge, experience and appropriateness relevant to each case. Their role is to provide a community perspective on the offending, to offer support to victims and offenders and to suggest options for a contract which will meet the needs of the victim and hold the offender accountable. Following the conference the offender appears in Court again to have the contract accepted and the case is adjourned until the agreed plan has been completed.
